Do you have any St. Patrick Day traditions?

my grandfather came from ireland, and my grandmother from scottland, on st. patty’s they ALWAYS made a dish called colcannon.its delish! you bake a real hame (or you can boil it) until extremly tender, and pull the meat off the bone, then coarsly chop the meat and set aside. peel and boil some red potatoes and when tender, mash them with hot milk and butter and some sea salt. (some people like green onions in this but we dont do that) then boil some green cabbage until just barely done in salted water.
mix the cabbage and ham into the mashed potatoes, and put into a cast iron pot if you have one, (any oven proof pot is alright too) make a shallow hole in the top of the potato mixture and put a chunk of cold butter into it. then cover and place in the oven at 325 for 10-15 minutes. then take out and pile into plates! enjoy! colcannon and soda bread is the best irish tratitional food yet!

what are some great ideas for a big St.Patrick’s day party? Food, decorations, drink ideas.?

    Feb 19th

We are having a large St.Patrick’s day party in a hall and would like some cool ideas for decorations, or drinks or music, any ideas would be helpful!!

Of cource, the Irish flag, shamrocks and harbs should be everywhere for decorations.

    For food:
    Irish stew
Corned beef and cabbage (that’s Irish-American, not Irish)
    Irish soda bread
    Sheperds Pie
Colcannon (mashed potatoes and cabbage side dish)
    Scones
    Bangers (Irish sausages)

    Drinks:
    Guinness
    Harp
Irish whiskey (I like Bushmill and Jameson)
    … Please… no green beer… All self-loving Irish shudder at the thought…

Here’s a link with a lot of Irish recipes:

For music… Irish of course… The more Irish rebel the better!
Wolfe Tones, Shebeen, Irish Brigade, Tommy Makem, The Clancy Brothers, the Chieftains, Athenrye, there are a lot, but these are some of the more famous ones… any jig or reel will do…
If you have a web connection, here’s some streaming content as well, but make sure to have some Clancy Brothers, Tommy Makem and Wofe Tones at least…

Hi, Irish folks out there! I need a perfect traditional St Patrick`s Day recipes for a main meal?

    Feb 19th

I am thinking about 3 things: Stout (read Guinness) meat and spuds.
Colcannon? stew? browsed some Internet homepages, was not really sure what would be most Irish! please help

I’m born and reared in Ireland so hopefully i can help.
Easiest thing would probably be to make a big pot of stew and have a few boiled potatoes with it, champ is just adding scallions to ordinary mashed potatoes but not everyone likes them.
For drink to wash it down you only need two things, Guinness and Whiskey. In Ireland when i ask for a pint of stout i expect Guinness, not Beamish or Murphys or any other inferior product. Regarding whiskey i’d go for a bottle of Bushmills or Jamesons as they are Irish Whiskeys and a nicer drink than any Scotch Whiskys on the market( Note the spelling difference in the two nations whiskeys!)
You could do worse than have a bit of Irish music to compliment your meal, The Dubliners, The Pogues and The Fureys are mainstream Irish or you can go for good old-fashioned Irish Republican music like The Wolftones or Charlie and the Bhoys. Enjoy anyway!!

    ST. PATRICKS DAY PARADE

    Feb 19th

    BALCONYTV.COM 17/03/2007
    PRESENTED BY PAULINE FREEMAN
Saint Patrick’s Day (Irish: Lá ‘le Pádraig or Lá FhĂ©ile Pádraig), colloquially Paddy’s Day or St. Patty’s Day, is the feast day which annually celebrates Saint Patrick (373-493), the patron saint of Ireland, on March 17.
It is the Irish national holiday and one of the public holidays in the Republic of Ireland (a bank holiday in Northern Ireland); the overseas territory of Montserrat; and the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador. In the United States, Australia, and rest of Canada it is widely celebrated, although not an official holiday.
It became a feast day in the universal church due to the influence of the Waterford-born Franciscan scholar Luke Wadding, as a member of the commission for the reform of the Breviary [1] in the early part of the 17th century.
A common practice among gardeners is to plant at least one potato, no matter how cold the weather, on St. Patrick’s Day. This is done in order to ensure a good harvest for the coming year. Some speculate that this may have arisen from the Irish Potato Famine.
